GED Preparation Course

This GED Preparation Course requires a combination of in-class learning and independent online learning.  In addition to this weekly 2-hour class, students will be expected to spend 6 to 10 hours a week in independent online learning and will be responsible for their progress until they successfully complete their GED exams. In-class lessons will emphasize test-taking skills as well as reviewing required content.

The initial class will include a proctored pretest, which will result in a personalized study plan and test-taking strategies (including suggestions for study preparation and GED test scheduling).

Sarah Lawrence Cinema Studies: Cinema Studies Class

The Nantucket Community School is partnering with Cinema Sarah Lawrence to allow island residents the opportunity to audit their Literature & Cinema studies classes while the program is  in residence on Nantucket from early February through the end of March.

In this Cinema Studies course, students will explore and contextualize a number of ideas, through the viewing and imaginative consideration of twenty-one motion pictures that will invite far-ranging discussions.   Each class will aim to foster an expanded dialogue that will allow students to interrogate and re-visit each picture screened in class and connect it with Cinema Sarah Lawrence’s planned film production of Martin Eden, by Jack London.  In each class, students will look at the impact, in each film, of cinematography, production design, lighting, editing, direction, performance and sound.  Each class will be largely self-contained - so island residents could miss one or more sessions and still be able to pick up the threads of screening and conversation.

Sarah Lawrence Cinema Studies: Literature Classes

The Nantucket Community School is partnering with Cinema Sarah Lawrence to allow island residents the opportunity to audit their Literature & Cinema studies classes while the program is in residence on Nantucket from early February through the end of March.

In this course, students will examine literature that finds characters under pressure as they navigate the complications of class, romance and aspirations. Students will examine the structure, prose style, and issues raised by Martin Eden by Jack London - along with three short novels and one play. This class will aim to create an expanded dialogue that allows students to interrogate ideas actively associated with the character and themes of each story - along with its connection or contrast to Martin Eden, Jack London’s autobiographical novel which serves as the inspiration for Cinema Sarah Lawrence’s dramatic feature film being shot on Nantucket upon completion of this course.
